The Republic of the Sudan and international actors have been engaging with great progress in offering different perspectives on overcoming the current political crisis and it was envisaged that a final Political Agreement was be signed earlier in April, which was to allow the Republic of the Sudan to restore democratic transition and end the crisis. Unfortunately, the unresolved disagreement between the Sudanese Military Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has led to postponement of the signing of the Political Agreement and triggered the current unfortunate escalation of crisis.
The Republic of the Sudan is one of the ten (10) Member States of Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) and in this regard, EASF follows with great concern the recent developments in the Republic of the Sudan our Member State, and expresses its deep concern about the current situation in the Capital of the Republic of the Sudan, and other major cities against the background of the outbreak of clashes between the two opposing forces.
The EASF calls on all parties to avoid further escalations, exercise restraint, reduce tensions and engage in direct negotiations to defuse the crisis, reduce the loss of human life including damage to property and infrastructure.
The EASF also calls upon the regional and international communities to encourage the parties to come to the negotiating table and find a solution through peaceful means to break off the current crisis.
The EASF stands ready to contribute to the peace and security initiatives rendered towards resolving the current crisis in accordance with its mandate which includes mediation and peace support operations.
