Youth Leads Deliberations on Peace and Environment in Djibouti
The Republic of Djibouti and the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) launched three days of activities in Djibouti between the 7th to 9th of May 2023. The theme of the peace seminar is dubbed “Youth 4 Peace, Promoting Peace, Protecting the Environment”. Youth leaders from various civil society organizations from EASF Member States including over 60 youths from the host nation participated in the event.
The youth delegates were warmly welcomed by youths from the host nation. During the opening ceremony the Minister of Youth and Culture, H.E DR Hibo Moumin Assoweh emphasized the importance of engaging the youths and civil society organizations in the promotion of peace and protection of the environment. He reiterated his government’s efforts in creating the necessary space for young people to participate and contribute to the peace agenda. Other speakers during the opening ceremony also highlighted the importance of involving youth as agents and promoters of peace and positive change.
The “Youth 4 Peace” initiative is aimed at actively engaging youth groups and environmental groups by providing a platform for discussions on several issues including awareness of the AU continental framework on youth peace and security. The peace seminar held in Djibouti concluded with a tree-planting event.
