Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

EASTERN AFRICA STANDBY FORCE COMMEMORATES THE 115TH INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Nairobi, Kenya – March 9, 2026. The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) marked the 115th International Women’s Day at its structures in Kenya and Addis Ababa. Under the theme “Give to Gain,” EASF celebrated the gains made by women not only in peace and security but also in other sectors where women play critical roles.

While recognizing that the journey toward gender equality is not yet complete, Major General (Rtd) Fatuma Ahmed, who was the keynote speaker, pointed out that the day was not only a moment of celebration but also a time for reflection, appreciation, and renewed commitment to the advancement of women and girls in every sphere of life.

She also stated that the day reminds us of the remarkable achievements of women around the world, as we recognize the courage of those who came before us and continue to inspire future generations. Additionally, she noted that every woman must continue the fight for gender equality because when women are empowered, society as a whole is empowered.

On his part, the Director of the Eastern Africa Standby Force, Brigadier (Rtd) Paul Kahuria Njema, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to fostering an environment where every woman and girl feels valued, respected, and empowered.

He also noted that the organization will continue strengthening policies that advance equality, provide mentorship and leadership opportunities, and uphold zero tolerance for gender-based discrimination.

Ms. Monalisa Noowe, Head of the Civilian Component, also recognized the strides that have been made toward gender equality while acknowledging that more still needs to be done. In a show of solidarity with the women of the Republic of Sudan, she urged members to observe a moment of silence.

Ms. Irene Ogaja, Assistant Conflict Analyst, recognized the roles played by women in society and urged those present to aspire to have their names embedded in the pages of history as champions of social justice and gender equality.

She also noted that when one woman’s achievement is celebrated, she becomes a role model; when stereotypes are challenged, pathways open; and when women are visible, the next generation believes they can achieve the same.

Other speakers, including Mr. Kenneth Albert, the IACS Coordinator; Ms. Ann Kathurima, Democratic Governance Specialist; Jane Marete; Amarech Hailu; and Brigadier General Getachew Ali, the Force Commander, among others, emphasized the importance of empowering women.

They noted that when women are given skills and opportunities, they contribute resources and innovation, enabling society to achieve greater global competitiveness.

The celebration also included a tree-planting ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, symbolizing the solidarity of Eastern Africa Standby Force women with the women of the Republic of Sudan.

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8 every year.
