Defence Ministers Reaffirm Commitment for Peace

1 welcomeH.E. Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed, Prime Minister of the Republic of Djibouti, commended the Eastern Africa region for its commitment and collective efforts the quest for peace and stability.

Hon Mohamed was speaking during the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Defence and Security on the final day of the EASF Policy Organs Meeting in the Republic of Djibouti on 18th January 2018.

This was the 23rd Ordinary Policy Organs Meeting which was convened to discuss policy issues and to provide guidance for running the affairs of EASF including the planned activities and the budget for 2018.

In the same event, the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Defence and Security, Gen Ali Mohamed Salem, also Minister for Defence of the Republic of the Sudan, noted the support being provided to the Somali government by the countries in the region, which has seen Somalia realise remarkable achievements in the last few years. “Somalia is slowly, but surely emerging from its long drawn-out conflict,” he added.

The Director of EASF, Dr Abdillahi Omar Bouh expressed confidence that EASF is on the right track in as far as the continental peace and security agenda is concerned.

Owing to his exemplary leadership, Dr. Bouh was awarded the Honor for Medals Commander of 27th June 1977 by Prime Minister of Djibouti, His Excellency Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed.

Col Joern Rasmussen, Chairperson of the Friends of EASF, said he was impressed by the competencies demonstrated by EASF in running the Field Training Exercise conducted in November 2017 in Port Sudan which confirmed readiness of EASF to participate in Peace Support Operations (PSOs). He expressed commitment by the Friends of EASF to continue supporting EASF in its journey.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Republic of The Sudan handed over the Chair to the Republic of Uganda, which will chair all sessions of the Policy Organs for the next one year.
 
The meeting was attended by Ministers of Defence and their representatives from the ten Member States.
