Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

Mashariki Salaam III is Flagged Off

EASF's Command Post Exercise's Director, Brig Dixon Chivatsi, presided over the roll out of the actual exercise play at the Kenya Commercial Bank Leadership Center in Karen, Nairobi, on Saturday, 26th March 2022.

During the initial briefing to exercise players from EASF Member States, Brig Chivatsi encouraged all actors to fully engage themselves so that the Command Post Exercise would achieve its laid down objectives. He expressed confidence that the exercise players would deliver as required, after having successfully absorbed a full week's induction training.

Command Post Exercise 2022, code named Mashariki Salaam III, is based on a fictitious country called the Republic of Carana. For the past few months, the Republic of Carana has experienced unrest and civil strife due to a disputed presidential election. This has resulted into a rise in human casualties as well as destruction of public and private property.

It is under the above premise that the Eastern Africa Standby Force, through the African Union (AU), flagged off its African Mission in Carana (AMIC) with the main objective of stabilizing and preventing further political violence in the country. The deployment sees personnel from civilian, police and military backgrounds work together with the local population during the mission, which culminates in peaceful and transparent elections in search of a new leader.

Speaking during an interview, the AMIC Chief of Staff, Colonel Abdallah Rafick, commented on his team’s efforts in ensuring readiness and competence in their respective deployments. “We have two years worth of training under our belts, from the top brass to the officers in the different deployment sectors, and it is with confidence that I say that, we are ready to deliver on our stated mandate and, ensure that the Republic Carana and its people transits from this presidential election with few hiccups,” Col Rafick said.

Mashariki Salaam III will thus provide EASF with an opportunity to exercise its highly trained capabilities and in turn enhance as well as maintain its Full Operational Capability status which was gained in 2014.
